Using BigFoot multiple possibilities of working safe, if possible, depending on your assignment and equipment
If working near leading edge, where the possibility of taking a free fall isn’t present, fall restricting equipment is useful. This could be a fixed length rope, or an adjustable solution, that enables you to mange the distance between edge and BigFoot. IMPORTANT, if using an adjustable system, a free fall may never be present. Always adjust so rope haven’t slack.
This type of tasks could be:
- Cleaning roofs
- Roof inspection
- Maintenance on equipment that is located within 2 meters from edge
- Mounting rails or collection safety solutions
If it’s necessary to work directly at edge, so a risk for a free fall is present, it’s important to use a shock absorbing link in your equipment. Either a with a absorber, or a SRL (yo-yo), note to things:
- Working with shock absorbing equipment requires a rescue plan
- Free space below user, must fit the used equipment, note absorbers often need more space below
The SRL must be approved with BigFoot, you can purchase approved equipment with your BigFoot. Free space depends on model and weight. Since a SRL always ensures a tight line, no slack in wire, the fall factor isn’t that important, but still needs to be taking into consideration.
Example on free space using SRL
BigFoot is placed 4,5 meters from unprotected edge, and user is connected to Dorsal ring on harness, at 1,65 meters. Since the SRL always will be used horizontally, a calculation defines that 4,8 meters of wire will be between BigFoot and user. So, in a fall, the users connection height 1,65 plus the extra 0,30 meters of wire, would result in a free fall on approximate. 1,95 meters before uses is stopped. The SRL is designed to lock when more than 5 kg of force is applied, so instantly block is locked and no more extra wire is pulled out.
Please note that a precis calculation isn’t easy to do, multiple factors is related to it, so the previous is only to be seen as an example on the limited difference when working with an SRL horizontally. If user is working in a sitting position, the difference will be close to 0 cm.
